Duplicate of a Duplicate - Plan a Filing System First

File duplicate detection programs can be an exercise in temporary relief and can create more confusion and or complexity than is needed.  Develop a filing plan first before purging.  Otherwise you might be creating more of a tangled mess than before you started.

- Start with a very broad group of like files such as documents, music, or videos first.   Photos can be a bit tricky so saving and organizing images of grandma for last might be a good idea.

- Start with very broad based subjects scheme such as 15 to 20 at most (with room for numerous sub-divisions) can be a good place to start... You don't want to have to use a map to understand or navigate your own filing system.  Sometimes small is good.  Keep your number of directories small.

Think about broad topic directory tree like: money, health, housing, legal, journals, manuals, etc... with all topics you might it is good idea to have more than say 10 documents in the category or several different things within a topic of money such as taxes, loans, savings plans, stock buy/sell records, bonds, budget etc...

- Start with a clean slate or a fresh approach. Mark file folders names beginning with a punctuation mark such as " - Health " after you have done a purging or organizing of like files in that folder... When the process is complete remove the punctuation marks.  You can repeat the process until your satisfied as sorting and reviewing files on a periodic basis is a good idea.
